The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture invited applications for bursaries from tertiary students at institutions accredited and registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training, for studies in heritage-related programmes.

Closing date: 31 January 2025.

Fields of study

  • Anthropology — preferably postgraduates specialising in forensics
  • Archaeology — preferably postgraduates specialising in bioarchaeology
  • Geography and geomatic sciences — preferably postgraduates in cartography and GIS
  • Archives and records management
  • Library and information sciences
  • Conservation of the built environment, including preventive conservation (as a field of study, not a single course)
  • Heritage and museum studies
  • Palaeontology
  • Indigenous Knowledge Systems, or courses contributing to the preservation and promotion of IKS and South African living heritage
  • History
  • Digitisation of heritage resources

This list is worth reading twice. Archives, records management, digitisation and history are precisely the disciplines that determine whether the Muslim contribution to South African life is recorded in a form that survives — or is left to be written by others, later, from what they happen to have kept.
