South Africa has an unhealthy relationship with alcohol.
The evidence is increasingly clear that the global industry’s messaging has misled the public for decades about what that relationship costs — and about who carries the cost.
The research on the adolescent and young adult brain is particularly stark. The brain continues developing well into the mid-twenties, and alcohol exposure during that window does not behave the way it does in an adult.
South Africa needs to review, rewrite and enforce its alcohol legislation as a national emergency — starting with advertising and with accessibility to young people, and including the removal of alcohol from educational spaces.
