Belgium Urged to Join South Africa’s Gaza Genocide Case

Belgium’s Deputy Prime Minister said she would propose that her government join South Africa’s case at the International Court of Justice.

On 9 January 2024, Petra De Sutter said in a message posted on X that she wanted Belgium to act at the ICJ, following South Africa’s lead on the threat of genocide in Gaza.

Belgium cannot stand by and watch the immense human suffering in Gaza. We must act against the threat of genocide.

South Africa did not bring its application expecting to stand alone. Whether other states join, and how many, is part of what the case is testing.
