SAMNET repeats its call for action on the rapid growth of gambling in South Africa.

The BBC report below sets out the growing problem of gambling among young people, driven by sports betting, and its effect on lives and families in Australia. Australia — a country with a long-standing gambling culture — is now debating a full ban on gambling advertising, and even the betting companies are proposing advertising limits as a “compromise”.

Few people appreciate how addictive gambling is, or the physical and psychological effects that follow, let alone the socio-economic consequences. Gambling is no longer entertainment for the wealthy. It is actively preying on the whole of society.

South African legislators need to take a strong and proactive approach now, before the problem outgrows any response.
