A Muslim pupil lost a High Court challenge to a prayer ritual ban at the Michaela Community School in London.

Beyond the obvious, notice the detail. The rules were introduced only the year before. The head teacher speaks of a culture shift. There are claims of intimidation by Muslim pupils, who are in all likelihood a minority of the school.

That framing suggests a colonial attitude demanding assimilation rather than integration — and the idea that the views of the many are somehow superior to the rights of the few.

If a rule or a tradition is prejudiced, exclusionary, or built on historical exclusion, then the rule needs to change.

Wherever we are in the world, we must speak out for the right of children to practise their faith.
