The South African Muslim Network extends its sympathies to the families, to the community and to Egyptians, following the killing of three monks and the serious injury of a fourth in an attack in Johannesburg.

It is unacceptable that anyone should be brutally attacked in this way — and more so when the victims are religious leaders, attacked within the confines of a place of worship and prayer.

We condemn the increasing number of instances of criminality, destruction and violent attack on or within churches, mosques and other religious institutions, in South Africa and abroad. We call on the South African government to take steps to protect religious institutions.

We call on citizens, communities and civil society to take a firm stance against violent crime, and we urge religious centres to increase their security and safety protocols.

We trust that the South African Police Service will apprehend the perpetrators of this crime, that they will be brought to justice, and that they will face the maximum punishment.
