National Mosque Open Day
Every Heritage Day – A Day of Unity and Understanding
Since 2017, SAMNET’s National Mosque Open Day (NMOD) has been held annually on Heritage Day (24 September), opening the doors of mosques across South Africa—and even beyond—to welcome visitors from all walks of life. CLICK HERE for the list of this years participating Mosques.
Purpose & Impact
NMOD fosters interfaith dialogue, raises awareness of Islam and Muslim heritage, and counters stereotypes by inviting non-Muslims into mosque spaces for informative, respectful engagement.
For example, the campaign has grown from a handful of participating mosques to over 60—including locations in Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Zambia, Tanzania, and Malawi—and earned endorsements from bodies like the United Ulama Council of South Africa and the Cape Ulema Board.
What to Expect
Each mosque offers visitors enriching experiences such as guided tours, presentations by imams or scholars, prayer demonstrations, Q&A sessions, henna art, hijab-tying demos, and distribution of literature—all designed to spark learning and hospitality.
In 2022, approximately 100 mosques nationwide participated, welcoming wide participation and support from groups like the United Ulama Council, Cape Town Ulama Board, Imam Development Project, Ahlus Sunnah Media Network, and the Islamic Propagation Centre International.
Why It Matters
As Dr Faisal Suliman, SAMNET Chairperson, explains:
The National Mosque Open Day… was initiated to showcase our heritage, break down barriers, stereotypes and to build bridges – the aim is to nurture mutual respect…
Visitors consistently report changed perceptions, better understanding, and deeper respect for Islam—empowering South Africans to connect beyond cultural boundaries
