Fostering a better understanding of religion in an effort to counter rising Islamophobia and misconceptions about Islam and Muslims.
The South African Muslim Network takes pleasure in inviting ALL South Africans to visit one of the participating Mosques on Heritage day. THE NATIONAL MOSQUE OPEN DAY campaign aims attract other faith groups/individual’s to the Masjid on Heritage day – Thursday, 24th September 2020.
All South Africans and the media are encouraged to visit one of the mosques to have a tour of the mosque and its facilities, have a chat about Islam and have any of their questions about Islam and Muslims answered. The purpose of the campaign is to briefly educate visitors about Islam and Muslims, to dispel myths, to demystify the misconceptions about Islam as well as build and strengthen relations with other religious groups. We would like to have a wide geographic spread of masjids throughout Southern Africa, who open their doors on Heritage Day to the general public to meet with local Muslims and ask questions and build relationships whilst following Covid 19 regulations, having safety procedures in place as well as following social distancing rules.
This is a way to build community relations, improve the image of Islam and teach others about our faith. As it grows, we hope the campaign will become recognized as a national event featured on the Department of Arts and Cultures calendar as well as to be included as part of The Official South African Heritage Day program of activities.
The following Mosques will be opening their doors this Heritage day:
1. Musjid-ur-Rahmaan (Durban North – Durban)
2. Masjidul Taubah (Malmesbury – Cape Town)
3. Musallah on Musgrave (Musgrave – Durban)
4. Mshadza Masjid (Nelspruit – Mpumalanga)
